Calculate your flooring
For rectangular floors and products sold by pack coverage.
How to calculate laminate, LVT or wood flooring
Measure your room length and width. For a rectangular floor, multiply length by width to get the area. Add an allowance for cutting waste and divide the adjusted area by the coverage printed on the flooring pack. Round up to whole packs.
Flooring calculator formula
Floor area = length × width. Area with waste = floor area × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100). Packs to buy = round up (area with waste ÷ coverage per pack). Material cost = packs × price per pack.
Worked UK example
A room measuring 4 m × 3 m has 12 m² of floor area. With 10% extra, plan for 13.2 m². If each pack covers 2.2 m², you need 6 packs. At £35 per pack, the estimated flooring cost is £210.
What waste allowance should I use?
Ten percent is a starting estimate for a straightforward rectangular room. Complex layouts, diagonal patterns, obstacles and matching patterns may need more. Follow the flooring manufacturer's guidance and check whether the product requires additional allowance.
Important limitations
This is an area-based purchase estimate, not a plank-by-plank cutting plan. For L-shaped rooms, calculate each rectangular section separately and combine the areas before applying waste and rounding to packs. Results exclude underlay, trims, adhesives, floor levelling, delivery, labour and taxes. Check the actual pack coverage and installation instructions before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for laminate and LVT? Yes. Use the coverage per pack printed on your chosen laminate, LVT or engineered wood product.
Why round up to full packs? Flooring is often sold in sealed packs. The calculator rounds the required coverage up to the next full pack.
Can I use square feet? Yes. Switch to US Units to enter feet and square feet. The calculation uses the same underlying area.
Does changing GBP to USD convert prices? No. Enter your actual local pack price. Only the displayed currency changes.
